Joint SALGEE-LSASAF User Workshop, 25 - 26 November 2024, EUMETSAT HQ, Darmstadt, Germany
Monitoring Drought Impacts on Vegetation & Feedback
- Sept. 18, 2024
Land-ecosystems have increasingly been subject to heavy drought, their role in weather, climate and associated extreme events are more and more realized. Thus, quantitatively evaluating drought impacts on ecosystems and their feedback to atmosphere is an important task of present research.
The Workshop is focused on application of EUMETSAT LSASAF satellite information to characterize different aspects of drought of vegetated land surfaces, related physical processes and consequent response. It is aimed at identification of research and operational state of art of user community, to provoke collaborations, and to discuss opportunities for development operational applications on actual drought related problems. EUMETSAT, LSA SAF and other SAFs, as well as ECMWF will present information on existing and future products and services.
EUMETSAT SALGEE Project in support to LSASAF (2009-2021)
Satellite Applications in Land surface analyses Group for Eastern Europe (SALGEE), established in 2010, to gather experts in the field of satellite meteorology to complement the activities of the EUMETSAT LSA SAF in order to progress the use of satellite Land Surface Analysis techniques in Eastern Europe and other regions of interest where their application might be beneficial. Information included in the CGMS-38 Report by EUMETSAT.

7 SALGEE workshops have been orginised since 2009, where:
Numerous satellite applications and studies are presented, focused on the validation of EUMETSAT and Land SAF products for drought assessment, forest fire detection and post fire effects.
Advanced knowledge and information between leading scientists and experts at an international level on the use of satellite land surface analysis techniques in operational meteorology and climatology have been exchanged.
Participants from many (22) European countries, Asia, Middle East have been invited with the aim to promote and strengthen the use of LSASAF products in research and operational activities.
Format of the Joint User Workshop includes:
- Oral and poster sessions with user presentations -
- Poster presentations by SAF developers in 1 min oral introduction -
- Discussions on
- Potential collaboration
- Co-development initiatives
The main topics related with presentation of research, applications, operational use of satellite data cover:
- SAF products in use for drought assessment
- SAF products in use for monitoring of drought dynamics
- Satellite data and numerical modeling: joint applications
- Data access and processing at EWC
How to apply
By invitation only.
