Release of Web Map Services
- June 26, 2025
WMS (Web Map Service) is an Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) web protocol that provides a simple HTTP interface for requesting online maps via a Uniform Resource Locator (URL). These maps are served as geo-referenced images, each associated with a coordinate reference system.
The retrieved images can be:
Displayed in a web browser, or
Loaded as layers in GIS desktop software such as QGIS, ArcGIS, MapInfo, AutoCAD, Google Earth, or any other application that supports WMS-client functionality.
Key Benefits of WMS
No need to download large datasets locally.
Real-time access to up-to-date geographic images.
Saves time and conserves local storage space.
Facilitates seamless integration into map creation workflows.
