Release of Meteosat Third Generation Surface Albedo and Land Surface Temperature products (LSA-105 and LSA-007)

First version of the MTG Albedo and Land Surface Temperature products is available in NRT
  • Aug. 13, 2025

Following the successful review and recommendation to declare the LSA SAF MTG Day-1 products as pre-operational, the following products will be officilally released on the 14th August 2025

LSA-007: MTLST – MTG Land Surface Temperature

Land Surface Temperature (LST) refers to the radiative skin temperature over land. It plays a key role in the physics of the land surface, as it is involved in the exchange of energy and water with the atmosphere. Accurate LST values are particularly important in a wide range of fields related to land surface processes, including meteorology, hydrology, agrometeorology, climatology, and environmental studies.

The MTLST is derived from the new FCI sensor onboard MTG, and shows some differences compared to LSA SAF MSG LST product (MLST), typically up to 1 K. These differences are due to variations in algorithm calibration, with the most affected areas being deserts during daytime.

LSA-105: MTDAL – MTG Daily Surface Albedo

Land Surface Albedo (AL) is a key variable for characterising the energy balance in the soil–vegetation–atmosphere system. Albedo quantifies the fraction of solar energy that is reflected by the surface, influencing the amount absorbed and transformed into heat and latent fluxes. Due to strong feedback effects, accurate knowledge of albedo is important for determining weather conditions in the atmospheric boundary layer. Additional application areas include hydrometeorology, agrometeorology, and environmental studies.

The MTLST is derived from the new FCI sensor onboard MTG, and compared with the MSG MDALv2 product, MTDAL shows small differences, typically less than 1%.
