Land Surface Temperature and Emissivity

Land Surface TemperatureLand Surface Emissivity

Land Surface Temperature (LST)

Land Surface Temperature (LST) the radiative skin temperature over land. LST plays an important role in the physics of land surface as it is involved in the processes of energy and water exchange with the atmosphere. LST is useful for the scientific community, namely for those dealing with meteorological and climate models. Accurate values of LST are also of special interest in a wide range of areas related to land surface processes, including meteorology, hydrology, agrometeorology, climatology and environmental studies.

Available Products:

  • MLST: LST retrieval from clear-sky infrared observations performed by SEVIRI/MSG (also available as monthly composites); demonstration product available for the Indian Ocean Data Coverage (IODC)
  • DLST: 10-day composites of MLST, including pixel-wise maximum, minimum and median LST at each acquisition time and respective Thermal Surface Parameters
  • MLST-AS: All-sky LST based on a merge of the MLST product with cloudy LST derived by a Energy Balance Model
  • EDLST: LST retrieval from clear-sky infrared observations performed by AVHRR/Metop

Land Surface Emissivity (LSE)

Land Surface Emissivity (EM) is an intrinsic property of all materials, which measures their efficiency in converting heat into radiation. It is a critical variable in the quantification of the surface energy budget and for the estimation of surface parameters from earth observation data. The LSE varies with surface composition, roughness and water content. It also depends on observation conditions, such as the sensed wavelength, spatial resolution and viewing angle.

Available Products:

  • MEM: daily LSE estimates base on the Vegetation Cover Method
  • MEMD: direct emissivity retrieval based on a Kalman filter approach, a physical scheme that allows the simultaneous retrieval of surface emissivity and temperature
